The Grand Opening was held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 305 Doherty St. (Corner of Stenger and Doherty Streets).  Events for the day included the Navy JROTC Color Guard from San Benito Veterans’ Academy, the Frank Roberts Elementary School Choir, the South Texas Mass Choir, exhibits both indoors and out and a car show in the playground sponsored by the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of Antique Automobile Club of America.  The museum opened at 10 a.m. and the events began at 11, with a walking tour of the neighborhood where the founding Black families lived, and a tour of Harlingen City Cemetery at 1pm, exploring the Black section, the burial place of Joe M. Callandret and other members of the African American community . 

Guests had the opportunity to visit the museum displays and  also “Fannie’s Fancies” Gift Shop in the museum before, during and after the events.  Spring museum hours are Monday, Tuesday and Saturday from 10am-2pm.
